Education and Learning Disabilities
The American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) view Learning Disabilities (LD) as neurological disorders that affect the brain's ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information. Educationally, these are defined as a significant discrepancy between a person's intellectual potential and their actual academic achievement in areas such as reading, writing, or mathematics. In the counseling field, the focus is not just on the academic deficit but on the "whole person," addressing the emotional, social, and self-esteem issues that often accompany learning differences.
