Internet Addiction
Internet Addiction (often referred to as Problematic Internet Use) is defined as a behavioral pattern characterized by excessive or compulsive online activity that leads to significant clinical impairment or distress in an individual's daily life. While the American Counseling Association (ACA) recognizes it as a serious mental health concern, it is currently categorized as a "condition for further study" rather than a formal standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR, with the exception of Internet Gaming Disorder. Counselors define the condition through specific behavioral markers similar to substance use disorders, including preoccupation with the internet, failed attempts to cut back, withdrawal symptoms (such as irritability or anxiety when offline), and the continued use of digital platforms despite the resulting damage to personal relationships, academic performance, or occupational responsibilities.
