Life Transitions
Life Transition is defined as a significant event or shift in circumstances that necessitates a fundamental change in an individual’s roles, routines, and self-perception. These transitions—whether "normative" (predictable, like graduation) or "non-normative" (unexpected, like a sudden loss)—require a psychological process of adaptation as the person moves from a familiar state to a new reality. According to the American Counseling Association's focus on developmental theory, these periods are characterized by a temporary state of instability or "disequilibrium" where a client’s existing coping mechanisms may be overtaxed. Counseling interventions for transitions aim to help clients process the emotional impact of the change, identify new resources, and successfully integrate the experience into their evolving identity.
