Sleep or Insomnia
Insomnia is defined as a persistent dissatisfaction with sleep quality or quantity, specifically involving difficulty initiating, maintaining, or returning to sleep despite having adequate opportunity. Per the DSM-5-TR standards used by ACA members, this condition is clinically significant when it occurs at least three nights per week for a minimum of three months and causes functional impairment in daily life. Counselors approach this not merely as a symptom of other disorders, but as a primary condition requiring targeted behavioral interventions—such as addressing poor sleep hygiene or "screen-time" habits—to restore healthy psychological and physiological functioning.
