The term "Substance Abuse" has transitioned into the broader definition of Substance Use Disorder (SUD). It is defined as a complex condition where the repeated use of alcohol or drugs causes significant clinical impairment, including health problems, disability, and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school, or home. Rather than focusing on a moral failing, the definition emphasizes a maladaptive pattern of behavior characterized by a lack of control, social impairment, and risky use, often involving physiological changes like tolerance or withdrawal.
