Multicultural
Multiculturalism is a framework that recognizes the complex diversity of a client’s identity, encompassing race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, religion, and disability. It shifts the counseling focus from a "one-size-fits-all" approach to one that acknowledges how power, privilege, and oppression influence a person's lived experience. Under the ACA’s Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies, counselors are expected to be self-aware of their own biases and to integrate the client’s cultural worldview directly into the therapeutic process to ensure ethical and effective treatment.
