Men's Issues
Men’s Issues refers to the specific psychological, social, and biological challenges that uniquely or disproportionately affect men and boys, often viewed through the lens of traditional masculinity. The American Counseling Association (ACA) and its divisions, such as the Association for Male Psychology, define this area as the study and treatment of how societal expectations—like emotional restriction, self-reliance, and dominance—can lead to issues such as "normative male alexithymia" (difficulty expressing emotions), increased risk of completed suicide, and reluctance to seek help. Counseling for men focuses on creating a gender-sensitive environment that acknowledges these socializations, aiming to address mental health concerns like depression, fatherhood, and relational trauma in ways that align with or healthy reframe male identity.
