Postpartum
Postpartum (more formally termed the postpartum period) refers to the timeframe following childbirth, typically spanning the first year, during which a parent undergoes significant physiological, emotional, and social transitions. The American Counseling Association (ACA) focuses on this period through the lens of Perinatal Mental Health, specifically identifying Postpartum Depression (PPD) and related mood disorders when symptoms like extreme sadness, anxiety, or exhaustion impair daily functioning. Unlike the "baby blues," which are short-lived, the counseling definition treats postpartum clinical concerns as serious conditions requiring evidence-based interventions to support the parent-infant bond and the parent's psychological stability.
