Adlerian Counseling (or Individual Psychology) is defined as a holistic, goal-oriented approach that emphasizes the individual’s search for significance and belonging within a social context. Developed by Alfred Adler, this framework posits that human behavior is "teleological"—meaning it is driven by future goals and a desire to overcome feelings of inferiority—rather than just past experiences. Counselors use this approach to help clients identify their "lifestyle" (their unique cognitive map of the world) and foster social interest, which is the capacity to contribute to the common good.
