In professional counseling, being culturally sensitive (often framed as cultural competence or responsiveness) is defined as the counselor’s active and ongoing process of gaining awareness, knowledge, and skills to work effectively with diverse populations. According to the ACA Code of Ethics, it requires counselors to recognize their own cultural identities and biases while validating the client’s unique worldview, including their race, ethnicity, gender, spirituality, and socioeconomic status. Rather than applying a "one-size-fits-all" approach, a culturally sensitive counselor adapts their interventions to align with the client’s cultural values, ensuring the therapeutic process is respectful, inclusive, and free from Eurocentric imposition.
